Pre-Arrival:

Prior to departing for the trip, we will be hosting three free discussions (hosted by our guides) centered around Zanzibar and the cultures we'll be experiencing. Once enrolled, you will receive more information about which readings we'll be discussing.
The purpose of the online readings and discussions is to make you as prepared as possible for the culture we are about to enter. This will also act as an opportunity to meet our guides prior to departure, who will be happy to answer any questions.

Day 1:
At the end of every day, our guides will sit with the group in what we like to refer to as a Tuko Pamoja. This will be a thirty minute discussion and reflection on what you experienced in that day.

- If you choose to fly to Tanzania with the guides: Meet your guides at Logan International Airport in Boston and depart
- If you choose to fly on your own and meet us there: Departing from your city of choice
Itinerary:
Day 1:
- Arrive at Dar Es Salaam International Airport just after midnight
- Check into accommodation
- If you chose to fly on your own and meet us there: A guide will meet you at the airport and escort you to the accommodation
- Rest, relax, and exchange money
- Depart for the island of Pemba in the late afternoon
- Arrive in Pemba
- Check into accommodation
- Tour of the town of Chake Chake
- Tuko Pamoja (a thirty minute evening meeting where we will discuss the day's events)
- Traditional Msewe dance demonstration
- Travel to Ole Uwandani for a traditional bloodless Pemban bull fight
- Tuko Pamoja
- Travel to Kuivi village for a sustainable handicraft workshop
- Visit to the Kidike Flying Fox Sanctuary
- Visit to Mandani for a traditional shamanic healing ceremony*
- Visit to Mr. Yakub, a mganga (traditional healer) for a traditional drumming ceremony

- Travel to Mjilni Ole village for a traditional Pemban cooking class
- Tour of Ngezi Forest
- Visit Vumawimbi Beach

- Trip to Misali Island to watch The Sacred Island, a documentary about environmental conservation on the island

- Ferry to to the island of Zanzibar
- Sunset cocktails at the Africa House
- Dinner at the Forodhani Night Market, Stone Town’s incredibly vibrant outdoor food market
